Medsoc’s mentoring program sees senior students (3rd year and above) grouped with first year students to ease the transition into life as a medical student at UNSW.

If you are a first year student, the mentors will help you out if you’re confused about aspects of the course, you want hints and tips for assessments, or you’d just like to know a little bit more about student life at UNSW.

This program is also an opportunity for senior students to share their experiences with the first years, as well as a valuable chance to revise, learn, teach and have fun.

Thanks to your generous responses we have reached the capacity for our Mentoring program!

Mentor responsibilities:

1. Mentoring requires a significant time commitment.

  • You are expected to arrange at least 3 sessions with your group. The first of these will be included in the Foundations timetable.
  •  You are also expected to prepare for sessions where necessary.
  • Aim to arrange at least 1 session in TP2 (BGD-A)

2. Be contactable and inform students if you are unavailable for a session.

3. Reassess how the group is going and be sensitive to the needs of your students – what do they want from the mentoring program?

4. Be enthusiastic and make it fun!

Upon completion of the 3 sessions and a mentor survey, mentors will receive a certificate to recognise their contribution.

IF YOU ARE A FIRST YEAR STUDENT – Listen out for more information on orientation day

Although all first years are involved in this program, please respect the following

Responsibilities of first year mentees

Communicate effectively with your mentor. Help your mentor organise times, let them know if you cannot attend for a particular session. Beyond the first session, mentoring is not compulsory. Mentoring should continue as long as both mentor and mentee are benefiting from it and if you want to leave the group, please do so politely.
